A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – MAY 27, 2012

I can totally understand the disciples not fully getting what Jesus is telling them in John 14. We are fortunate to read the passage this side of the resurrection, so it makes more sense to us. And yet, there are mysteries about the nature of God’s existence and how we will join with it after death that even we do not fully comprehend, so it’s no wonder the disciples have the wrong idea when Jesus tells them that he’s going somewhere.

Martha’s confession to Jesus at the end of our passage is powerful: “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world” (Jn 11:27). She should be applauded, since not many people at the time had reached that realization.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – MAY 13, 2012

A running theme in the Gospels is that people don’t fully understand who Jesus is and what he came to do. This holds true for random crowds of people and also his closest disciples. Such lack of understanding is what prompted his statements in our passage this week from John 10.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – MAY 6, 2012

After the feeding of the 5,000 miracle, you would think that the crowd would be overcome with belief in Jesus’ power and divine origin. But they’re not, and their thickheaded-ness is on display in their follow-up conversation.

It was common knowledge back then that if you had a disability of any kind, it was because you were being punished by God for some sin(s) that you or your parents committed. So naturally, when the disciples see a blind man, they want to know if he’s blind because of his parents, or if it’s his own fault.

One reason the woman at the well story is interesting is because it shows the step-by-step progression from skepticism to belief. As the story begins, Jesus is tired from walking, so he sits at a well to rest (Jn 4:6).

It’s hard to know when to turn the other cheek and when to turn over tables. Jesus presented both actions as examples, and in this week’s passage, it’s the latter. But why get so upset now?

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – APRIL 8, 2012

The first Easter was the greatest day in the history of the world. It’s when the most extraordinary thing happened: someone came back from the dead.

It’s interesting to see nuances surface when you study a Bible passage very closely. For instance, in combing through our passage this week (Jn 18:28-37), it seems to highlight different aspects of the characters involved in Jesus’ trial–aspects that I hadn’t noticed before.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – MARCH 25, 2012

I think it’s safe to say that all true Christians want as many people as possible to become followers of Christ–to believe in him and thereby be saved. And yet, we all know that many people choose not to follow the way of Jesus and in fact shun God completely.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – MARCH 18, 2012

Jesus’ miracle at the wedding in Cana is a neat story for a few reasons. First of all, when the Son of God decides to miraculously transform water into wine, he doesn’t just make normal wine, no.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR – MARCH 11, 2012

Our verses this week talk about what Jesus was up to long before he was born. Jesus was God incarnate in human form, but Jesus wasn’t always in human form. The Gospel of John refers to the pre-incarnate Jesus as “the Word.”
